Weatherization And Installation of New Cooling and Heating Systems

The Whole House Approach
We at A-Plus Energy Management, Air Conditioning and Heating helped pioneer this concept of addressing all your building energy needs at one time for more complete comfort. Many of the items are addressed by the utility companies, and in some cases, the measures that achieve the highest energy savings are rebated by some of the utility companies. Many years ago the theory was to oversize the system to make sure it could blow plenty of cool air. Today, Making the building more comfortable includes not only making the building more energy efficient, but properly sizing the cooling and heating system to be able to not only adequately cool the building, but also have it run an appropriate amount of time to remove excess humidity. Proper sizing is the key - undersized units will work too hard and not have enough "get up and go" to keep up as the unit ages, and oversized units won't run long enough to pull out the moisture in the air, also costing more to operate. When we are called to give a "bid" on replacing a heating and cooling system, typically we perform a complete energy audit and will look in the attic at the ductwork, insulation, and attic ventilation, then look at possible sun exposure through windows and skylights, and finally look at the heating and air conditioning needs. It's about your comfort - not just a new air conditioner.

Duct Sealing and Replacement
Perfecting the art of sealing the duct system to not allow air to be drawn in from the attic or blow inadvertently into the attic is an area over looked by most contractors. Replacement of faulty older gray flexible duct or bad duct board that is falling apart also enhances air flow results. This improves overall performance, while air balancing with an airflow hood improves uneven air flow. Zoning different areas with thermostats that control dampers and air-flow to each area makes buildings more comfortable

Saves Money
Leaking and undersized ducts can decrease the overall efficiency of your air conditioning and heating system by as much as 20%

Increases Comfort
Sealing or replacing your ducts with properly sized ducts allows the air conditioner to evenly heat and cool all rooms in your home

Healthier Home
Proper sealing reduces the risk of pollutants circulating through your home

Safer Home
Leaks can cause equipment such as fireplaces, wood stoves, water heaters, or clothes dryers to back-draft causing combustion gases such as carbon monoxide to flow back into your home.

A-Plus encourages the addition of attic insulation to the current code level, of R-30, insulation around skylights, attic entries, and attic knee walls to keep conditioned air in your building longer, and to keep your heating and cooling system running less. (Costing you less money each month).

Solar Gain Control
We encourage reduction of direct sun through windows and skylights to keep direct sun from heating your building and making your air conditioner work harder and cost you more to operate. On existing windows we recommend installing solar screens to keep the sun from directly heating up the glass and to reduce the heat gain through the glass. If you are replacing windows, we suggest double pane "low-E" glass. Skylights with shade cloth covers dramatically reduce heat gain through the roof. The payback is fast and the comfort level is increased by reducing hot spots due to direct sun.

Building Envelope Weatherization
While only a few years ago we thought the most important energy saving measure was to "tighten" up the building, today we have reduced our emphasis on building weatherization and increased our emphasis on duct sealing and replacement. Typically we will, on an as need basis, weather-strip doors, seal plumbing penetrations, seal around duct grill openings, and reduce air leakage as much as reasonably possible without making the building so tight that it can't "breathe"

"We picked A+ after seeing two other contractors, and found them to have the best prices and they followed thru with what they said they would do. We are very pleased."
